Geoff Mains
(b. 29 May 1947 – d. 21 June 1989)

We felt it would be best to share the thoughts of other famous names of Geoff's work and who he was.

Geoff Mains died in San Fransico at Kaiser Hosptial, although he was born in England and lived a good part of his life in Canada. He loved San Fransisco with a deeply respectful passion.

Geoff's struggle with AIDS, like many, started long before he was dianosed. The disease was taking his freinds and loved ones, adn he knew that it already had a strangle hold on him before a Doctor confirmed the fact in late 1986. After that, he became even more deeply invovled in the work he was doing so well. He wrote more and faster, spoke in public more forcefully, and carried into more private converstations more conviction about his ideas and opinions than people were used to hearing from him. Geoff was a Doctor of Biochemistry, an enviromental engineer, a writer and a champion of gay sexuality.  (Joeseph W. Bean)

Many people in our community think of, and remember Geoff as, an activist, writer, organizer and sexually hot man. And he was indeed all of these things. But to me, and I suspect to many others, he was something more. He was a person that understood that commuinity is a group of individuals that is only viable as the support we all give each other. And even beyond that knowing, he lived it waking his talk.  (Cynthia Slater)

Geoff spent alot of his time at the Ambush, Febes and the Eagle. He cared passionatly about the South of Market, its bars and its future as a gay neighborhood. Geoff was a dedicated biker. He was a proud rider and proud member of two clubs, the Zodiacs in Vancover and the Warlocks in San Francisco. He often spoke of the importance of the leather/levi clubs and was working on an article on their history when he died.  (Gayle Rubin)
