About the Activist Awards
These awards have been part of the NLA International and presented at our Living in Leather events for over 30 years. They have always been created to recognize people that have increased visibility on our Mission, or on our community in some manner. Sometimes they have been activists, authors, and artists. However, each has always made an impact on either an international, national or regional level to their prospective communities.In each year’s tab we have included a short bio, photo if available, and the award they have been granted. We hope you enjoy the history and impact these people have made over their history, and we ask that if you know of someone that you think should be part of these awards to nominate them.
Each year at the Living In Leather gathering the awards are given in the following categories;
Lifetime Achievement Award - to someone who has gone above and beyond for our way of life.
Steve Maidhof Award (renamed man of the year) for those that perform work on both the local and international level.
Jan Lyon Award (renamed woman of the year) for those that perform work on the local or State/Providence level.
President’s Award - an individual, the President of NLA-I, sees as having done something extra special or consequential.
Vice President’s Award -an individual, the President of NLA-I, sees as having done something extra special or consequential.
Chapter Of The Year -given to the chapter that the board feels has best exemplified NLA's purpose or to a new chapter that has genuinely thrived.

Activist Awards
Catagories are:
Lifetime Achievement Award - Anyone can be nominated or you can self nominate, all nominations must be accepted.
Steve Maidhof Award - For National and/or International work. Anyone can be nominated and you can self nominate.
Jan Lyon Award - For Local or regional work. Anyone can be nominated and you can self nominate.
President and Vice President Awards - Determined by the sitting Officers.
Chapter/Club of the year - Determined by the Officers of the NLA International.
Nominations Process and Requirements:
• Nominations start November 1st thru Dec 31st.
• Nominations to the Activist awards are FREE.
• All finalist will be announced before Living In Leather and after April 1st and end January 31st.
• Winners will be announced at the Living In Leather meeting.
• Biography, photo of the cover, photo of activist, and a brief description of their community work, and contact information must accompany the nomination.
• Nominees may self-nominate, if nominated by the public the nomination must be accepted by December 31st
• Only the Lifetime Achievement winner will be notified of winning in advance of the Living in Leather event and will be provided a free pass to the host event, to give a keynote to the attendees of the conference and awards.
• All other finalists will be notified of whom the winner is at Living In Leather.
• Nominations list will be publicly sent out via media and all Finalists will be invited to the Living In Leather awards and membership meeting.
Activist Award Winners:
• Winners will be given a page to highlight their work, bio, photo, and links to sell their books through their own links within our website.
• A plaque of the recipient’s name and title being awarded.
• All nominees will be invited to the Living In Leather host event.
• Winners will have the right to use an award graphic for their specific award and year, to attach to their websites.
• Winners will receive a one-year free Independent membership of the NLA-International, and the rights of voting.
• Winners will have a chance to be interviewed for our First Link Magazine for the year to our membership. This magazine is archived on our site for future reference in PDF.
